A look back to the beginnings of Euromillion
It all started with the history of Superdraw with the start of the Euromillion lottery at the beginning of 2005. The first Superdraw took place exactly two years later on 09.02.2007.
When Euromillion was launched, there were only three participating countries (UK, FR, SPA). At the time of the first SuperDraw there were already nine. While today’s super-drawings always start at 120 million euros, it was still 20 million less at that time. This EUR 100 million jackpot was won by a Belgian. But the Belgian kept his identity secret.
On 07.10.2011 the British couple Angela and Dave Dawes won a jackpot of 117 million Euro. Since the winners of jackpots of big lotteries want to remain anonymous in order to avoid any hype about their person and to avoid scroungers, it is an absolute rarity that the winners step into the limelight. Apart from the British couple, only one other player named Neil Trotter has dared to do this. He also came from Great Britain and on 14.03.2014 he had the pleasure to win a fabulous 120 million Euro.
A few years later, in October 2014, it was almost twice that amount (190 million euros). This gigantic cash prize was won by a player from Portugal. There it took six draws for a player to guess all the numbers correctly. As a result, the jackpot has risen to the fixed limit of 190 million euros for the first time.
What is the difference between the standard draw and the Superdraw of Euromillion?
Superdraw is a special form of Euromillion that replaces the normal draw for a short period of time. The jackpot is raised to at least 100 million Euro regardless of its current amount. Thus the starting amount of such a draw is many times higher than the regular starting amount of 17 million Euro. The maximum jackpot size for both the normal draw and the special draw is 190 million Euros.
Are there any special rules that I have to follow in SuperDraw?
There is no difference between the two draw types. Both take place according to the Euromillion lottery rules. In both cases, five out of 50 main numbers and two out of twelve star numbers are selected.
What happens if the jackpot is not won in a SuperDraw?
As in a normal lottery game, the lottery is drawn until the jackpot is hit or the maximum amount of 190 million euros has been reached. In the latter case, this maximum jackpot can be played up to four times in a row. If no winner has been found, the jackpot will be drawn in the next lower class.
Update since 4.2.2020:
- When the jackpot reaches this amount of €200.000.000, the cycle can last five draws. If there are no winners in this 5th draw, the jackpot will be paid in the lower level – Winning Class II (5 correct + 1 star).
- The jackpot remains fixed during these last five draws of the cycle. For the next cycle, the maximum jackpot is set at €210,000,000 (an increase of €10,000,000).
- Then again the Jackpot payout in the 5th last draw of this cycle. The Jackpot remains fixed during these last five draws of the cycle. And so on…..for the next cycles, the maximum jackpot can reach 220,230,240 and a total maximum of €250 million.

How many Superdraws are held per year?
There is no fixed rule about the minimum or maximum number of Superdraws. In some years, such as 2013 and 2014, SuperDraws were held three times. More often they have not taken place every year. There is also still no specific date for the announcement of an upcoming special draw. As a rule, a few weeks in advance will be announced when the next special draw will take place.
